I am a tidbit person. I didn’t know this about myself until embarrassingly recently, but it turns out I have spent most of my life collecting odd facts, unexpected connections, and small true things — and then cornering whoever is nearby to tell them about it.
This is that, but in writing. So you can close the tab whenever you want. No hurt feelings. Mostly.
Orbiting Now is a writing blog about the ordinary stuff — the birthday cake from Costco, the kid you just dropped off at college, the common cold that your daughter brought home like a souvenir. I write about oranges and champagne and the Target that, for reasons no one can explain, does not have a bakery. I write reviews of things that probably don’t need reviewing. I collect tidbits from the orbit and file them here as mission logs, because everything sounds more important when you give it a space name.
I’m Jeanette. I live in Colorado with my husband John, who is in the .01% of ChatGPT users (according to ChatGPT, so take that as you will), and our daughter Lauren. Our older daughter Helen is at CU Boulder, thriving, and no longer requires a full parental anxiety deployment at move-in. This is growth. Hers and mine.
I write about what it’s like to be at the part of life where you celebrate milestones with supplements and champagne in equal measure. Where the things worth grumbling about are small — a salsa that’s too fresh, an extra tenth of a mile to a bakery — and the things worth being grateful for are enormous and mostly invisible until you sit down and write about them.
That’s what this is. A dispatch from someone orbiting the everyday, trying to notice it before it spins past.
